★Ingredients
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium onion, finely chopped
1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
1 teaspoon dried oregano
3-4 garlic cloves, minced
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
Salt and pepper to taste
Fresh basil leaves, chopped (optional, for garnish)
★Instructions
- Heat the Oil: In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
- Sauté the Onion: Add the chopped onion and cook until soft and translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add the Garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes, until fragrant.
- Add Tomatoes and Spices: Pour in the crushed tomatoes. Add the dried oregano, dried basil, and sugar if using. Stir well to combine.
- Simmer: Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for at least 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to meld together. For a thicker sauce, simmer longer.
- Season to Taste: Add salt and pepper to taste. Adjust the seasoning as needed.
- Finish with Fresh Basil: If desired, stir in some fresh chopped basil just before serving for a burst of fresh flavor.
Variations:
- Spicy Sauce: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes when sautéing the garlic.
- Vegetable Sauce: Add finely chopped carrots, bell peppers, or mushrooms along with the onions.
- Meat Sauce: Brown ground beef, pork, or sausage before adding the onions, then proceed with the recipe.
Enjoy!
