★Instructions
- Prepare the Sloppy Joe Filling:
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef (or turkey) over medium-high heat until browned. Drain any excess fat.
- Add the chopped onion, bell pepper, and garlic to the skillet. Cook until the vegetables are soft, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Reduce the heat and let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Prepare the Cornbread:
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or a similarly sized cast-iron skillet.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- In another bowl, whisk together the milk, vegetable oil, and eggs.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Fold in the chopped nuts.
- Assemble and Bake:
- Pour half of the cornbread batter into the prepared baking dish or skillet, spreading it evenly.
- Spoon the sloppy joe filling over the cornbread batter, spreading it evenly.
- Pour the remaining cornbread batter over the sloppy joe filling, spreading it to cover the filling completely.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the cornbread comes out clean.
- Serve:
- Let the cornbread cool for a few minutes before cutting into
- enjoy!
