★Ingredients
1 medium head of cabbage, chopped
1 lb (450g) ground beef or pork
1 onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 carrot, grated or finely chopped
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 teaspoon paprika
1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes (optional)
1 teaspoon dried thyme
Salt and pepper to taste
1/2 cup beef or vegetable broth (optional)
My Amish friend showed me this treat and I couldn’t stop eating it!
★Instructions
- Cook the Meat:
- In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
- Add the ground meat, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned and fully cooked. Drain any excess fat.
- Add Vegetables:
- Stir in the grated carrot and cook for a few minutes.
- Add the chopped cabbage and cook until it starts to wilt, about 5 minutes.
- Season and Simmer:
- If using, add the diced tomatoes and beef broth to the pan.
- Stir in paprika, thyme, salt, and pepper.
- Cover and simmer on low heat for about 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender.
- Adjust Seasoning:
- Taste and adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper if needed.
- Serve:
- Serve hot as a main dish or alongside your favorite side dishes.
